Key to Writing 6

Dear Editor,
Your latest article about globalization was really instructive and I would like to comment on this issue. Globalization is a process which refers to the integration of all economies, societies and cultures; thus creating the so-called “Global Village”. It is mainly advocated by western countries since it involves the opening of markets for their commodities whereas many people reprove it for various reasons.
It is true that globalization can have some minor benefits on us a developing country. Big international companies outsource some of their production to our country which can partially reduce unemployment. Besides, information spreads more quickly and easily thanks to the new means of communication. Finally all citizens of the “Global Village” will be able to wear the same clothes, eat the same food, watch the same films at the same time and so on.
However, the side-effects of globalization are more far-reaching. Globalization entails that strong economies will prevail over weak ones. Consequently, globalization may often be mixed up with “Americanization” owing to the hegemony of the American economy. Furthermore, the similar lifestyle imposed by globalization will lead to the disappearance of local traditions and customs. Many countries will therefore lose their identities and even their religion. Last but not least, despite favouring employment by opening plants of multinationals locally, the profits are taken out of the country.
It’s taken for granted that globalisation is inexorable, however the challenge will be how to preserve the interests of our country and how to keep our identity against the western winds.
Yours faithfully,
